The Low FODMAP diet in functional gastrointestinal disorders. Kevina has successfully helped many clients overcome IBS symptoms. At your appointment your symptoms will be discussed along with your current diet and lifestyle. Kevina will device a plan appropriate to your needs. One of the approaches used for IBS treatment is the low FODMAP plan
What is the low FODMAP diet?
Recent research into IBS has focused on a group of sugars in the diet called FODMAPS (Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and PolyolS). These sugars can be poorly absorbed in the gut and fermented by bacteria to produce gas. Current research suggests this group of sugars contributes to the symptoms of IBS.
Dietary restriction of these sugars (the Low FODMAP diet) is a specialised area of nutrition. It is vital that you seek the guidance of a dietitian with training and experience in this area if you wish to follow the diet to relieve IBS symptoms.
The diet is effective when FODMAP-trained dietitians provide dietary advice. A recent evaluation has shown that 76% of patients that had seen a FODMAP-trained dietitian reported improvement in symptoms after being on the diet (1). Well developed and comprehensive written materials were provided to these patients. The diet is individualised to each patient taking into consideration usual dietary intake and symptom profile. Careful implementation is needed to ensure the diet is effective and nutritionally adequate.
Dr. Kevina Cardiff, Consultant Dietitian at Pure Nutrition has been trained on how to deliver and implement the low FODMAP diet for optimal efficacy.
